Clam Bayou is a sheltered estuary preserve: mangrove shorelines block the wind, there's no open-water crossing, and the water stays calm even when the Gulf is kicking. Add wide, ultra-stable clear kayaks and you have the easiest, most confidence-building first paddle in the area.
What You'll See
Don't let the calm fool you. This little sanctuary is packed with life. Herons and egrets stalk the shallows, ospreys patrol overhead, mullet leap around your bow, and manatees and dolphins visit regularly. Through a transparent hull you'll also catch what most paddlers miss: crabs, whelks, rays, and fish moving over the grass flats below you.
