1. Local Hazards

  • Tidal Currents & Wind: Strong currents are common. Wind can increase rapidly — stay within designated zones.
  • Boat Traffic: Always yield to larger vessels. Watch for boats in channels and near docks.
  • Underwater Obstacles: Avoid shallow sandbars, oyster beds, and seagrass. They can cause capsizing.

2. Life Jacket & Distress Signals

  • Life Jacket (PFD): Must be worn at all times and properly fitted.
  • Fit Check: Lift by shoulders — jacket should not rise above chin or ears.
  • Emergency Signals:
  • Whistle: 3 short blasts = emergency
Visual: Wave paddle overhead or raise arms in “Y” shape
    Voice: Shout “Help!” or “Mayday!”

3. Navigation Rules

  • Right-of-Way: Kayaks yield to all motorized vessels.
  • Channel Markers: Red right returning (red on right when heading in).
  • Distance: Stay 100+ feet from docks, swimmers, and dive flags.

4. Alcohol & Drugs

  • Zero Tolerance: No alcohol or impairing drugs allowed — including kayaks.
  • Impaired guests will be denied launch with no refund.
